The palace was built by major industrialist, Chaim Frenkel, in 1908, who, in the late 19th century opened one of the largest and most modern leather processing plants and footwear factories in then Tsarist Russia in the city of Šiauliai. Chaim Frenkel Palace is a building of the modern epoch of architecture. His family lived there, and then from 1931 to 1935 it was a Jewish secondary school. During and after the war it became a military hospital. In 1994 it was sold to the Šiauliai \"Aušra\" Museum. Renovations are expected to be complete soon. There are three interior and four gallery halls in the newly renovated section where manor interiors, work of applied art, books, weapons and watch collections, and a selection of unique Japanese ethcings is displayed. The museum halls host concerts and other events.
